Beyond the Baseline: The Two Metrics of Stewardship

The initial expert-led accounting was invaluable but costly and unsustainable for large-scale application. We are now working toward a universal accounting framework: the Nature Positive Farming (NFP) scheme, which integrates 10 core metrics into a single, farm-level result. This move is driven by the need for cost-effective, reliable data.

While most metrics (such as tree cover and groundcover) can be sourced remotely via satellite imagery, two critical indicators demand our focus in the field:

  • Ecological Condition: This metric measures the degree to which a parcel of land has been modified from its natural state.

  • Forage Condition: This is a measure of the land’s capacity to dependably produce quality forage for livestock. It is estimated by assessing the diversity and proportion of productive, palatable plants for grazing.

These two metrics, Forage Condition and Ecological Condition, have been highlighted by our supply chain partners as key requirements for establishing direct selling relationships with woolgrowers. We are actively upskilling our team in field monitoring to collect this precise, high-value data.
